A weekend (and summer-evening) food and farmers’ market at Granger Bay — the best window into how Cape Town actually spends its weekends, and a brilliant breakfast over the sea for the price of a coffee back home.

What is it?
It started as a community farm in the suburb of Oranjezicht, and the market grew out of it — a place for local growers and small food makers to sell directly to the people eating their food. These days it lives at Granger Bay, on the edge of the V&A Waterfront, in a big open space that opens straight onto the sea. You’ll find fresh produce and flowers alongside coffee roasters, bakers, and dozens of cooked-food stalls. It’s busy, it’s local, and it isn’t dressed up for tourists.
Why go?
Because it’s a real window into how Cape Town lives well on a weekend — we came away with a feel for how the city’s well-heeled locals actually spend their Saturdays and Sundays: good coffee, fresh produce, a slow plate of something excellent by the sea. It’s fun, it’s delicious, and it costs almost nothing. We went on a warm Wednesday evening, when the market runs late and the light over Table Bay is gorgeous — come hungry, and let it be the whole plan rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else.
